Changes in the Hydrological Dynamics of Lakes and Reservoirs in a Warming Climate and the Anthropocene

Background
Lakes and reservoirs are crucial freshwater resources in India, playing a vital role in agriculture, the drinking water supply, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.
The decline of lakes and reservoirs in India—especially in urban centres like Bengaluru—has emerged as a major environmental and social concern. Urbanisation, pollution, and land encroachment have contributed to shrinking water bodies, depleting groundwater, and frequent flooding.
This crisis highlights the urgent need not only to mitigate current challenges but to secure water resources for future generations.
