Youth for Understanding of Geosciences and Action

Background
India faces severe ecological risks — 68% drought-prone, 60% earthquake-prone, and 40 million hectares flood-vulnerable. Yet Earth sciences remain largely missing from our education system. To bridge this gap, Prayoga has created YUGA – Youth for Understanding of Geosciences and Action, a program that builds geoscience literacy, drives youth-led research, and promotes community sustainability.
The program aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as:

Why Earth Science Education Matters:
Earth sciences help students:
• Understand the physical planet they live on—its structure, cycles, and dynamics
• Interpret real-world data (maps, weather, imagery)
• Connect natural systems with human activities and sustainability
• Recognise patterns of risk and resilience
• Develop inquiry, analysis, and observation skills
• Foster care, respect, and responsibility for the planet

A strong foundation in Earth science education nurtures global citizenship and prepares young people for roles in climate science, urban planning, natural resource management, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development. The failure to understand Earth’s systems is a failure to anticipate, mitigate and adapt to crises.

Transforming Earth Science Education: Make Earth sciences accessible, engaging, and inquiry-driven for school students and teachers.

Engaging Public and Youth Dialogue: Democratize Earth science knowledge and make planetary issues visible, shareable, and discussable across society.
Foster independent and mentored research in Earth sciences by school and undergraduate students.

Create a space of wonder, knowledge, and interaction where learners can immerse themselves in the history, dynamics, and future of the Earth.

To build an international platform for reflection, innovation, exchange, and commitment to Earth education and youth action.
